we were closing tonight. because it's been cloudy. we started at 48 degrees at 3:00 in the morning. it's down to 31 at o'hare and the temps keep falling as arctic air invades the area and it's doing so on howling winds. look at these gusts in the city, at naperville, geneva and university park with the temperature down to 30 now. winds sustained at 20 gusting to 31 at o'hare. so we were in full-blown winter mode after having flirted with 50 degrees in parts of the area. late yesterday and last night. 32 at midway. 36 is the reading with the 17- mile-per-hour wind and 14-mile- per-hour gusting wind from the west, southwest at gary and there you see the temperatures in map form and wanted to show you the rainfall, too. we have the second biggest rains since late september in autumn that had not produced much rain. it was the sunniest autumn in 11 years around here according to -- in .8 of an inch in

down. this is the satellite imagery and see the clouds. also as the clouds leave, we will pick up some blank frames but see the snow on the ground. 36% of the country under snow. it's about three times amount covered by snow last winter. so from here just west of us, all the way up to the arctic it's solidly snow covered and that's allowing the cold air to run southward look at the temperature in alaska. 35 below zero. last week it was raining and one of the latest rains ever recorded in fairbanks in the interior of that state and now here they are back to full- blown alaska winter weather. and the southern flank of the cool air will come into the mid west with 25 dubuque. 23 at the twin cities and more than 20-degree temperature drops here throughout a good chunk of the heartland ever the country. winter is grabbing hold and doing so with all of this wind at the same time. and we were used to that and that's what typically happens this time of the year. look at the windchills which

goes sub zero out west of us. but get an idea of the air mass coming in. bottom line pull the winter wardrobe out and we will use it for awhile. here the showers and thunderstorms where this cold air makes contact with the warm aiair we were in nor a time yesterday and the clusters of snow showers. these are fairly light. we are getting visibilities of nine miles as flurries fall out here in iowa with howling 30- mile-per-hour winds. so this is not a blizzard out here. just flakes of snow caught up in the wind and that's what will come in here as afternoon wears on. in fact, look at our forecast here. from our rpm model. the sticking snows are where you see the darker blues here and northern wisconsin will get in on that, too. looks like for us won't be sticking until maybe friday night and saturday and that system will warrant or observation and careful monitoring and will be doing that. here is our forecast for the chicago area.

cloudy, blustery and colder on this final day of november with temperatures falling into the 20s and snow flurries developing as afternoon goes on. those are the first official snow flurries at midway airport this season. temperatures will be going into the 20s and amid the west, to southwest wind at 14 to 22 and gusting at times. tonight cloudy, blustery, cold, some passing flurries or snow showers. low 22. west winds 12 to 24. and tomorrow cloudy, blustery and cold as december and meteorological winter open will see some flurries and a high of 28 degrees and finally on thursday it will be partly sunny but still chilly and 24 and a flurry and a little disturbance later in the day. much of date will be precipitation free. so some authentic weather. it's amazing when you look at weather records how the first week in december start to chaifng two-thirds of the opening weeks of december produce measurable snow. it's kind of a benchmark. when you go passed december 1
